The Brook Restaurant and Bar

The Brook Theater, located in the Brookside District was designed by William Henry Cameron Calderwood in the Streamline style of Art Deco architecture and opened in 1945. It was a 600 seat movie theater famous for its "Saturday afternoon matinees" and the longest run of the movie "South Pacific" in a single theater in Oklahoma—over one year! Since that time, it served as the home of the American Theater Company for about 15 years and then was transformed into The Brook Restaurant and Bar which operates today. One of the mementos of its history as a movie house is an enormous projector just inside the door.

  4. Years ago I lived in the Brookside Apartments. My cousin and I would walk to the Brook on Saturday for the kiddie shows: starting with several cartoons, a serial, then a movie, usually about a horse or dog. I'll never forget, I went 14 weeks in a row for the serial. The next week, for the last installment, they showed the previous week again and I missed the following week and never got to know how it ended.

  5. I worked at the Lewis Meyer Bookstore located on the corner by the theatre in the last few years before Mr. Meyer passed away. It was a great honor and experience. Mr. Meyer published seven books, some about his family and wildcatter father Max Meyer from Sapulpa. He also wrote a wonderful and hilarious book called "The Customer is Always" about his adventures as a bookseller in Tulsa. Highly recommended!
